About me

  • I am wife, a mother and I manage the daily affairs of our home. I love spending time with my family, homekeeping, decorating, studying the Bible, wearing pretty lipstick, cooking for those I love, monogramming, gardening, reading, organizing, watching college football, laughing with friends, going out with my husband and snuggling my children.

I have many friends who choose to educated their kids in a private Christian Classical schools. Some are full time traditional week and some choose a university model two days a week for the younger ones where the parent helps guide work at home the other 3 days of the school week. I also know parents that use this classical model of education at home full time with their children. Right now we use our local public school but, we have been investigating the classical options in our area. I'm not equipped or trained to teach my children classically at home. I would need support of a full time classical school or a University model classical school.

How will you implement or supplement with this classical education from home as parents? What will it look like? You and your husband with your advance education would be wonderful home educators for your children! :)

Hi Ali! I love hearing from you.

We are going to use Classical style to supplement what our kids get in public school. Right now, reading, spelling, memorizing and writing are our focus because reading and use of the English language is the key to so much. Keep in mind our oldest is in Kindergarten.

I am only doing about 1 hour per night of home education for now. After school, my daughter comes home, has a snack and relaxes for a while. Then we start working. She spends about 30 minutes following along with an audio book (Peter Pan or Charlottes Web or even Goonie Bird Greene). This practice is making a tremendous difference in ERH's reading ability as well as her love of literature. The stories are rich. She LOVES doing this.

Then we practice handwriting for about 10 minutes. I am using a continuous stroke approach so that cursive will be easier for her. It's called d'nealian handwriting. After handwriting we do 10 minutes of spelling.

Finally, I am having ERH memorize short poems and verses so we work on those. Memorizing is easy for her right now so she loves this too.

When I first looked into Classical Education I was so overwhelmed I thought it would never work. Then I realized I didn't have to do it all at once. I have no idea what all of this will look like in a couple of years but for now it is working for us.

I hope this helps answer your question. I wish you the best as you figure out what will work for your family. Love, Maria

Maria,

That's for giving me a snapshot of how it could work in partnership with public school!

Audio books and memorizing poems is a great idea!

I really appreciate it!
